Ready for AR/VR and game with animation. Bajadasaurus is a genus of sauropod dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous epoch, specifically the late Berriasian to Valanginian stages, which spanned between 145 and 132.9 million years ago in northern Patagonia, Argentina. It was first identified in 2019 based on a single specimen discovered in 2010 that features a largely complete skull and parts of the neck. The only known species is Bajadasaurus pronuspinax. This genus is classified as a member of the Dicraeosauridae family, which comprises relatively small and short-necked sauropods. Bajadasaurus boasts bifurcated, extremely elongated neural spines that extend from its neck. Similarly elongated spines are known in the closely related Amargasaurus, with various possible functions proposed for these spines, including serving as passive defense against predators in both genera. The skull of Bajadasaurus is slender and equipped with around 48 pencil-shaped teeth that are restricted to the front of the jaws. Its eye openings were exposed in top view, possibly allowing the animal to look forward while feeding. Bajadasaurus was found in sedimentary rocks from the Bajada Colorada Formation, which were deposited by braided rivers. It shared its environment with other dinosaurs such as Leinkupal and various theropods.
