Bagpipe player - Bruegel fountain

In 1979, Brussels' city leaders embarked on an ambitious project to revive their ancient tradition of public drinking fountains. Inspired by ornate historical troughs, they aimed to recreate the original system using vibrant scenes and characters from Pieter Bruegel the Elder's iconic paintings as a guide. The bronze statues adorning these new fountains were primarily crafted between 1980 and 1984 by skilled artists Jos De Decker (1912-2000) and Jean Roig (born 1926), who carefully positioned them atop slender, fluted columns. Unfortunately for the city, these stunning works of art soon became a magnet for thieves and vandals. This particular fountain depicts a lively scene from The Peasant Dance, featuring a skilled bagpipe player in the foreground.
