
Bacunayagua Bridge and Landscape 3D model

In this model, I am presenting the iconic cuban Bacunayagua Bridge and surrounding landscape. This work was supported mainly by analyzing historical archive images taken during the construction and a few sketches that include real dimensions, all of these available online. Some elements like vegetation, road geometry, west and east abutments were extrapolated to fit the scene. The model integrates four main stages: digital terrain model generation, bridge elements modeling, road channel modeling and finally the rendering stage with three distinct light scene approaches (morning, afternoon and night) ready to enable by tweaking few parameters. First stage, the terrain modeling is derived from aerial imagery, it's associated with UTM projected coordinates and was generated with controlled precision to ensure proportions integrity. It extends for 285ha/705ac, 1.8Kms/1mi across, with elevations between 25m and 114m to ocean level. The original model is georeferenced but all scene was moved close to origin to improve rendering performance. In second stage, bridge structural elements were reproduced to a high level of detail, dimensions and proportions, including bolts and nuts of the guardrail and also some elements that are enclosed beneath the pavement. With 28.5 meters of spacing between piers, the main deck extends for 313.50 m with 16 meters of constant width. The concrete arch foundations axis sits 114 meters from each other. Third stage was about setting up the bridge onto the terrain, at correct bearing and elevation. This allowed to extrapolate east and west abutments and road channel, based on centerline profile projected on DTM. Next step, I used graded road assembly (ratios 1/1 and 2/1) to generate cut and fill model and proceed to integrate all mentioned elements into a scene. Finally in the fourth stage I rendered all the elements, added vegetation and modeled the concrete monument that stands on the east side at the province border. All elements were included into collections and the model can be separated into its individual components. Mind that the vegetation consists in several collections of flat transparent png files that were spread randomly across the terrain. The scale of the vegetation was also taken into account. At the moment the model it's only available in .blend format and includes all the elements used to compose the scene and generate thumbnails. I have plans to publish a simplified model that includes only the geometric elements.
