Backstone Beck 04 (July 2013)
sketchfab
This massive square rock sits firmly on the west side of Backstone Beck, a prominent feature of Rombalds Moor in West Yorkshire.\nDocumented as IAG283 in Boughey & Vickerman’s 2003 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’, the stone was included in ERA by the CSI: Rombalds Moor Project under the designation ‘Backstone Beck 04’. This exceptionally coarse-grained rock boasts an unusually deep grooving pattern, featuring around 35 cup-shaped motifs, two with discernible rings and one oval design approximately 2 cups in size. All these motifs remain in excellent condition, likely due to the stone's protection from weathering or its relatively recent origin. In 2014, a collaborative effort by City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council’s Countryside Service and Historic England successfully redirected a nearby path away from the rock to prevent damage caused by cyclists.
