Back-2-Back dual Greg's Wade Extruder X Carriage for Prusa I3
pinshape
I've been working on this design for a while now, and after making some changes to eliminate holes that would require tightening clips around linear bearings, it started weakening over time, resulting in numerous failed prints. This was with just one extruder installed. Additionally, it proved difficult to get the timing belt inside. I still believe the concept is viable, but it's back to the drawing board for adjustments. I'm aiming to add a dual extruder setup to my i3 printer. I'm very pleased with my Greg Wade extruder design for the i3, and I didn't want to sacrifice print space in my X-axis (which is made of wood). Extending the Y-axis is relatively straightforward since all that's required are slightly larger pieces of threaded rod. To make it possible to mount a second Greg Wade extruder on the back, I've added a backplate and modified the carriage. However, assembly is challenging at present because the back plate obstructs easy insertion of the timing belt. Prints come out nicely without supports. No guarantee of success: currently, I'm concerned that the NEMA 17 motor in the back extruder will collide with the upper bearing mount. This issue could be addressed by lengthening the backplate by about 1 cm, but I worry this might introduce too much torque. This design serves as a starting point for a back-to-back extruder mount. My intention was to modify the Wade hinged extruder to use NEMA 14 motors, but it demands 40n-cm of torque, which is approximately eight times more than what my available NEMA 14 motors can provide. Instructions: First, you'll need to obtain the Prusa i3 plans from GitHub: https://github.com/josefprusa/Prusa3 Next, copy the provided OpenSCAD files into the box_frame folder. Ensure that carriage_l is set to 80 in the configuration.scad file. You may need to trim the M3 mounting bolts as they currently align back-to-back and are too long for mounting the rear extruder.
