Bacchus

The god of wine dominated outdoor spaces where Renaissance masterpieces clashed with ancient art. Commissioned for the garden of Villa Bartolini in Gualfonda, this Bacchus was swiftly recognized as a stunning work of beauty and refinement, inspiring countless young sculptors to follow its lead. In 1544, Gherardo Bartolini, brother and successor of the benefactor, presented the statue to Cosimo I de' Medici, who displayed it in the grand apartments of Palazzo Vecchio. The statue was relocated once more during the 17th century and suffered significant damage in a devastating fire that ravaged the building in 1762, leaving behind visible scars.
