Percival Ball honed his skills at the prestigious Royal Academy before showcasing his talents from 1865 to 1882. In 1866, he received a well-deserved medal for his striking relief depicting The Brazen Serpent. Ball's impressive marble work, The Genius of Lancashire, currently housed in the Manchester City Art Gallery, bears a striking resemblance to this present masterpiece. This classical study of a nude boasts a purity of design and form that is unmatched. In 1879, Ball showcased two exceptional works at the Royal Academy, one of which, the Bacchante, may be connected to this present marble. Signed and dated on the reverse side PERCIVAL BALL.ROMA.1876 Purchased as part of the highly anticipated 19th Century European Art auction, February 1st, 2019, in New York City.
