Ancient City Model: Jerusalem's Bible Lands Museum 600 B.C.E. Babylon, a dominant kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia, flourished from the 18th to 6th centuries BC. Strategically situated on the Euphrates river, Babylon was divided equally between its left and right banks, with strong embankments built to prevent seasonal flooding. Founded originally as a small Akkadian town around 2300 BC, Babylon eventually grew into a major city.
