Babylon 5 Explorer Class Pre-B5 Planet Killer Remix
thingiverse
This is a remix of the Babylon 5 Era Explorer Ship. Ever wonder why the E.A.S. Cortez had so much empty space? I did, I always thought it was to repair jump gates. Till I 3D printed them side by side. It just didn't make sense. All this unused space may have once purposely been occupied at one time. The ships I believe date back pre-Babylon Project, meaning the Earth Minbari War. When Designing ships, there's certain criterias and standards. Everything has a space and never a space missued, at-least in Naval terms. It would make sense that a desperate to survive people on the brink of destruction would be inventive and create the last desperate super weapon, "The Planet Killer". There wasn't enough space to fit a jump gate, and with those holding so much energy, why create a massive faraday cage for the crew inside? But there's plenty of room to fit many Missile tubes.Anyway, history and design always go hand in hand, so here's my take on it. The Explorer Ship may have been the result of a Peace Treaty, a post war Naval Downsizing transitioning the ship to a Peace Keeping Role. So a potential Planet Killer Candidate during war time. So why not, I remixed it to see what it would look like. The front Hanger section is armored, a refueler is exiting the ship, the hollow areas filled with Port and Starboard Missile Launchers, a Defense Grid over and below, main rotating 360 degree / 360 degree midship main batteries along with Stern and Aft mounted period correct Dreadnought Batteries. So that's the accommodations ironed out. Strategy, probably wait in Hyperspace till the main defense are down or week enough to punch a hole in. The Nova's, Hyperion's and Olympus Class going in first.Anyway, here's my remix, no I don't have any intellectual rights as this is a remix and all credit where its due. The Prints are astonishingly detailed, so keep an eye on your speeds and temps. I used PETG at factory filament recommended temps and had a max speed of 100mm/s. Long Story short, you'll be a very happy camper with the gun metal grey out there or silvers. This design is validated. The files are arranged ready for you to print. Feel free to remix if you'd like too. Lets get this party started and start filling in the history gaps. I included the full 3D STL if your printer likes horizontal printing more than vertical. I will create a stencil for this model for easier painting in due time.Enjoy! more to come.-JH
