About Turtle Ship (Geobukseon)... Turtle ship was the world's first armored vessel. In the late sixteenth century, Admiral Yi Sun-Shin of Chosun Dynasty in Korea led a decisive victory over invading Japanese naval ships by deploying turtle ships as frontline attack boats. The distinctive features of turtle ship include an iron roof to shield against enemy gunfire, sharp iron spikes atop the iron cover to deter boarding, heavy cannons positioned for attacking enemy vessels nearby, and a crucial dragon head that emitted smoke and flames. Although no precise design drawings or construction details remain today, some drawings from 1795 offer glimpses into the overall shape and types of turtle ships. Reconstruction models are on display at The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul, Korea, as well as in the city of Tongyeong.
