The coastal seal (Phoca vitulina), commonly referred to as the common seal, is a genuine pinniped species thriving in temperate and Arctic marine shorelines across the Northern Hemisphere. As the most widespread of all true seals, walruses, eared seals, and they inhabit waters along northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and Baltic and North Seas coastlines. The harbor seal boasts brown, silvery white, tan, or gray coats with unmistakable V-shaped nostrils that distinguish it from other species. Reaching adult lengths of 1.85 meters (6.1 feet) and weighing as much as 132 kilograms (290 pounds), blubber under the skin protects its vital functions and regulates body temperature. Harbor seals generally gravitate towards familiar resting areas or haulout sites where they find secure habitats, commonly on rocky shores although ice, sand, and mud can also provide sufficient protection from adverse weather conditions and predators, typically in close proximity to their food sources. Males often engage in intense combat over mates in the water as well as on land. The female harbor seal delivers a single pup after an approximate nine-month gestation period. Solo caregiving by females for each pup, weighing up to 16 kilograms (35 pounds), allows newborns to quickly master swimming and diving within hours of birth. After a few weeks relying heavily on its mother's nutritious milk, they become independent.
