These are expansion components to be used alongside the Learning Resources Robot STEM Mouse in teaching coding to grades Preschool through 2nd Grade. These components, such as the Baby Robot STEM Mouse, serve as objects in mission challenges. How I Designed This The Baby Robot STEM Mouse may be 3D printed with the bottom part as a large block of cheese (yellow), then using z-axis pause and filament change, the baby mouse can be printed as white. The Baby Robot STEM Mouse prototype .stl was not designed exactly to the contour of the Robot STEM Mouse. There are several different .stl files from experimenting that need some improvements. While this prototype works for the purposes of objectives, a much better build would have been achieved with a 3D scanner. That would be phase 2 of this project or something someone with a scanner could complete. A perfect contour of the Codey mother mouse on four sides of the Baby Mouse box would allow us to give students two-dimensional challenges where they push the Baby Mouse box in one x-axis direction, back out, go around to a side, then push the Baby Mouse box in the y-axis direction. This video was made before adding the Baby Robot STEM Mouse however it gives you an idea of how an activity progresses. Objectives Students will practice designing the code necessary to push the baby mouse to the target location. Audiences Baby Robot STEM Mouse is geared towards K-G2. Subjects Computer Science Skills Learned (Standards) K-2-ETS1-2. Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. K-2-ETS1-3. Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs. Lesson/Activity Duration: Mission challenges can vary from 2 minutes to 30 minutes depending on how many different missions the educator wishes to give students. Preparation: Baby Robot STEM Mouse missions are challenges that educators can add on to the standard mission cards included with the Learning Resources Robot STEM Mouse. Educators can copy the original cards and add the Baby Robot STEM Mouse in there or make new maps. The most basic example shown in the picture is to have the baby mouse placed at a location that has line-of-sight to the cheese then challenge the student to use Codey the mommy mouse to push baby mouse to the piece of cheese then back out and go around baby mouse to reach the cheese as well. Right now, the current .stl does not have the exact contour necessary to do two-direction moves with the baby mouse. If we could 3D scan the mouse contour then we could probably create a more exact movement so that the Codey Mommy mouse could push in one direction then back out, go around to the side then push it from the side for two-dimensional movement.
