Baburu, The bubble bot - Robot action figure (1 piece print)
thingiverse
Meet Baburu, the Bubble Bot! I was immediately captivated by the Maker Faire Robot Action Figure's design and couldn't help but fire up my CAD software to see if I could create a one-piece robot just like it. Behold, that creation is here! Note: I scaled included STL to 110% (see instructions below for details). Update: A lower poly model has been uploaded as the high poly count was causing chatter on the neck joint. Instructions He's straightforward to print. With my standard settings (close to default) and slicing with Simplify3D, no support is needed. Printing takes about 4-6 hours, depending on the settings used. I scaled the included STL up to 110% - he will print at 100%, but I found that I got better adhesion of the knee joint this way. The large gold print was 150% - he's prone to falling over because he's so heavy! Biggest failure point encountered: bed Tramming. If the bed was too far away, it wouldn't stick; if it was too close, things started fusing together at the first layer. Plus, getting in a hurry only added to the problems. Clearance is 0.3mm for all parts except the neck, which requires 0.5mm clearance due to how STL handles circles. Typically printed with PLA, I did try some old ABS and the robot with the mostly black background turned out to be an ABS print. The first layer got stuck together in a few places, but after cutting them loose with a razor, he functioned just fine - although some overhangs had a less-than-fine finish.
