History: The manufacturer announced in February 1982 that they were developing a stretched version of the 767-200. This new model, the 767-300, boasts a 6.42m (21ft 1in) stretch made up of two fuselage plugs, one forward and one behind the wing centre section. The flightdeck and systems were directly carried over from the 767-200, with only minor changes to accommodate the increased weight of the new version. Initially, the maximum takeoff weight was the same as that of the later 767-200ER. The first test flight of the 767-300 took place on January 30, 1986, and it received certification in September of that year. The higher-weight Extended Range ER version made its maiden flight on December 19, 1986. Rolls-Royce RB-211-524G engines became available for this model from 1989. The range of the 767-300ER has proven to be very popular among airlines, which use it for long-range low-density flights.
