History In February 1982, the manufacturer announced plans to develop a stretched version of the 767-200, which ultimately became the 767-300. This new variant boasts a significant 6.42-meter (21-foot 1-inch) stretch, consisting of fuselage plugs positioned forward (3.07 meters/10 feet 1 inch) and behind (3.35 meters/11 feet) the wing center section. The flight deck and systems were carried over directly from the 767-200, with only minor changes made to accommodate the increased weight of the new version. Initially, the maximum takeoff weight was identical to that of the later 767-200ER. The 767-300 took its first flight on January 30, 1986, and received certification shortly thereafter, entering service in September of the same year. The higher-weight Extended Range ER variant made its maiden flight on December 19, 1986, while Rolls-Royce RB-211-524G engines became available from 1989. The range of the 767-300ER has proven exceptionally popular among airlines, which use it for long-range low-density flights.
