This is a small replica of the Aztec sun stone. The Aztec sun stone (Stone of the Sun in English) is an impressive late post-classic Mexica sculpture displayed prominently in the National Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, and is arguably the most famous work of Aztec art. The massive stone measures 358 cm in diameter and 98 cm thick, and it weighs approximately 21.8 tonnes. Following the Spanish conquest, the large monolithic sculpture was deliberately buried in the Zócalo, the main square of Mexico City. It was rediscovered on December 17, 1790 during repairs to the Mexico City Cathedral. After its discovery, the sun stone was mounted securely on an exterior wall of the Cathedral, where it remained until 1885. Initially, early scholars estimated that the stone was carved in the 1470s, but modern research indicates that it was actually crafted sometime between 1502 and 1521.
