The Azadi Tower, initially known as Shahyad Tower, is an iconic monument situated at Tehran's Azadi Square, Iran. Standing 45 metres tall and entirely clad in marble, it serves as the west entrance to the city and belongs to the Azadi Cultural Complex that encompasses a subterranean museum. Conceived by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, to celebrate 2,500 years of the Imperial State's existence, the tower was designed by Hossein Amanat post his competition win. Influenced by classical and post-classical Iranian architecture, Amanat's design reflected the artistic trends of the 1960s following the White Revolution. The surge in Iran's wealth led to modernization initiatives that reinvigorated its art industry.
