Axles serve as central shafts for rotating wheels and gears on vehicles. In some cases, the axle rotates with the wheel, while in others, it remains stationary allowing wheels to rotate around it. Bearing or bushing supports are provided at mounting points where axles are fixed. This concept is also seen in bicycles, referred to as spindles. In cars and trucks, tandem axles refer to transverse pairs of wheels and their housing or shaft, which can be either bolted or splined to the wheel. The term "axle" is also used in a broader sense to describe any pair of transverse wheels, even when not connected.
