Axle for Metal Spool Holder
prusaprinters
So, I wanted to mount spools inside the metal cabinet above my printer, and feed the filament outside through some simple grommets or fairleads. There are plenty of great, printable spool holders out there to choose from, but I needed 4 of them, and I didn't really want to commit to that much print time.I like working with sheet metal, so I decided to make some simple bent metal spool holders, and I had planned to turn the axles from delrin on my lathe. But the best idea turned out to be printing the axle, so that I could have the printer working on that, while I made the rest out of metal.I won't be giving exact dimensions for the metal portion since you will know better than I what overall configuration your spool holders need to have. I will note that I made these from .032" thick (a little less than 1mm) 4130N, which is overkill strength wise, but I had some left over from another project. Any sheet metal up to .063" (i.e. 1.5mm) should work with these, as long as the uprights are somewhere near 3" apart. I stuck adhesive tape backed magnetic strips on the bottoms so they will stay in place in the cabinet.I drilled the ½" holes in each side for the axle prior to trimming to final dimensions, then trimmed the top such that the axle drops right into the rounded notches thus created.I printed these out of PLA using the default Prusament settings, but if doing so again I would perhaps use PETG or at least go up on the perimeters and top/bottom layer thickness, because I broke the end of one when I dropped it on the floor. When I sliced it, I carefully painted on supports for the grooves, which was a total waste of time because the auto-generated supports option resulted in the same exact print time, and the supports looked exactly the same too. Here's a link to the grommets I am using as a fairlead to feed the filaments out the bottom of my cabinet:https://www.printables.com/model/205339-dry-box-screwless-grommet-for-ptfe-tube
