We deliberately bang our dome cameras around in the lab and the rounded lens takes quite a beating. The outer plates can be replaced, but it costs us. (we're using them with tripods, etc.) This cowl attaches to the plate with adhesive and protects the lens when it crashes to the ground. It also blocks side lighting to some degree.
