Axis & Allies 1942 Unit Trays Because the game board size is a major factor, I decided to go with long and narrow trays, just like the original A&A Styrofoam trays - this way, you can easily get your units in front of you on a normal table. This unit tray is optionally a 3-piece or 4-piece construction per army (See photos: Grey Box is 3-piece assembly, and Yellow box is 4-piece assembly). The SHIP TRAY has a flange on the bottom to fit into the top of the LAND TRAY in place of the LAND LID, making a single 3-piece stack. Print the land lid last after you've given it a try! I needed a fair amount of sanding (long, straight-edged rasp) to make the SHIPS tray fit into the LAND tray, but if you and your equipment are more skilled at supports than I am, perhaps you can get a clean print of the necessary supports. I think the 3-piece is preferred - you can snap the SHIP LID to the bottom of the SHIP TRAY when playing - no lids lying around. I tried some finger indentations to assist in removing the lids (they are almost too perfect), but this weakened the overall connection edges, causing splaying and breaking (see photos - the orange set). Also played a lot with tray depth, but each army has different shapes, sizes and numbers of units, so what you see here is the greatest common denominator - also wanted to avoid pinching the fragile pieces. Removing the text would greatly simplify the print job. My first design! Next to paint ship smokestacks to help identify which is which (major game design flaw, imho) - going to coordinate colors with dice - eg: I use blue dice for 2, so destroyers will all get blue smokestacks.
