To grow an avocado tree from a pit, start by carefully peeling off the outer skin of the pit and placing it in the center of the container. Next, fill the container with water to create a shallow pool that surrounds the pit, allowing the seed to remain partially submerged at all times. Give the container a spot with bright indirect light, where the temperature remains consistently around 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, and slightly cooler at night. Change the water every few days to prevent bacterial growth, and within six to eight weeks, you should start to see the emergence of roots and eventually a green shoot that will develop into a small avocado tree. Once the seedling has two sets of leaves, it's time to plant it in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter, such as peat moss or compost, in a container that is at least six inches deep. Water the soil gently but thoroughly after planting and continue to provide bright indirect light and moderate watering until the tree reaches maturity.
