I'll give this a shot, but it's definitely an unusual scenario. When the pump on my lotion bottle starts running low, I take action by cutting it near the bottom to extract as much of the remaining product as possible - usually enough for another week or two. If I don't cap off the bottle during this time, the contents will eventually dry out completely.
