The device operates automatically. A modified spool holder goes beyond the basics. Simply insert a spool and insert the filament right through the hole, then it dispenses. Preventing filament from unraveling or tangling is especially important with a direct feed extruder, and you can also add foam to have a dust filter for your filament. It's additionally useful for 3D printers where an alternative spool holder would be more convenient for spools up to around the size of a kilogram of filament.
