An impeller, often crafted from materials such as iron, steel, bronze, brass, aluminum, or plastic, serves as a rotating component in centrifugal pumps. It transfers motor-driven energy to the pumped fluid by accelerating it outwards from the center of rotation. The resulting velocity is converted into pressure when confined by the pump casing. Impellers typically feature short cylindrical shapes with an open inlet, or 'eye', for incoming fluid, vanes for radial pushing, and a drive-shaft bore fitted with splines, keys, or threads. In some cases, cast impellers may be referred to as rotors, and can be more cost-effective when integrated into their support structure, which is driven by an electric motor, combustion engine, or steam turbine. The term 'rotor' often encompasses both the spindle and the impeller when they are bolted together.
