This work-in-progress project features a floating "Z" axis that performs well, with a micro switch option compatible with Marlin's auto level feature. The hot end serves as the probe for this setup. Although the tool holder hasn't been completed yet, an update from 2018 highlights the creator's homemade 3D printer, which features the floating "Z" axis and has exceeded expectations. An earlier update in 2014 explains the addition of a micro switch to the lower "X" axis, with adjustable height settings using nuts and bolts on either side. This switch completes the "Z" circuit when it comes into contact with the "X" carriage. The designer is currently working on a lower "X" axis for tools and accessories, allowing the extruder/hot end to enter standby mode while an accessory performs tasks during printing. They also consider incorporating an auto-leveling system like Radu's "Auto Touch Z-End Stop" for the Prusa i3. The required materials include wire for the auto "Z" stop circuit, four LM8UU bearings for the "Z," two to four additional LM8UU bearings for the tool holder, and eight-millimeter smooth rods of the same length as the upper "X" axis. The designer also needs longer screws (25 to 30mm), nuts, wire-to-screw connectors, and printed parts from their design. The instructions involve turning off all power to the printer, removing the X axis, disassembling and repurposing existing parts, installing new components, connecting wires, and ensuring the software is set correctly for the new Z stop configuration. The project is ongoing, with updates planned as progress continues.
