Auto retracting z-probe
thingiverse
An auto Z probe designed for HydraRaptor can measure Z values before retracting itself. It may also be adaptable to other wooden machines like Makerbot. Check out http://hydraraptor.blogspot.com/2011/04/auto-z-probe.html for instructions. To assemble, print the parts and ensure the 4mm holes in the guides allow smooth rod movement. Drill a tight 4mm hole in the hat without gluing it. Place two magnets that attract each other, preferably using a low force microswitch. Mount the probe close to the nozzle's axis, with the rod about 5mm above the nozzle tip when raised. Attach a weight sufficient to operate the switch reliably.
