Autel antique, Musée Saint-Raymond (31)
sketchfab
Toulouse, discovered in 1862 near Saint-Etienne Cathedral, at the intersection of Sainte-Anne Street and François Verdier Allees. Limestone. 1st century. INV. Ra 8 The open mouths of the characters (a satyr, a Silenus, an old bearded man, a young man) evoke theater masks. These images refer to Bacchus, closely associated in the Roman world with Liber Pater, Latin god of wine and citizen freedom, and Greek god Dionysos. This altar, discovered in the same sector as the sculpted centaur handle, suggests the presence of a cult, private or public, in honor of the wine god.
