UPDATED PART 23 Feb 2022 The parts to make an 0-16.5 model of Austrian narrow gauge loco 699.01. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:69901_Mauterndorf.jpg This design is to fit a Wrenn / Hornby Dublo Stanier 8F mechanism (admittedly an old model, but one remembered fondly from my youth) I hesitated to publish this as I did not expect a model using such an old mechanism would interest anybody else, but I was wrong. The tender runs on Dapol wheels in slaters top hat bearings. The loco has been stretched by 10mm to accommodate the motor rear bearing within the cab. The loco was 3D modelled complete and a CAD model of the mechanism was inserted as a hole to make space for it. This was not entirely successful and extra carving was needed. One friend reminded me that removing support was tricky, especially around the loco lamps. The final objects have the lamps removed plus the clack valves better fixed to the boiler. All six lamps are now separate fittings. See "699 LHS rework" and "699 RHS with fixes for floating parts. The model was then cut into pieces to avoid excessive removal of support. The tender is assembled with the wheelsets in position. Assembly was done with 5min epoxy, and it was necessary to wire the body halves together to keep them aligned while the epoxy cured. The body is fixed to the chassis using 2 screws under the cab into the tapped holes in the casting (this fitting needed 1mm of packing) and a third screw up through the chassis at the front, into a hole tapped into the boiler. This screw also passes through the cylinder cover yoke, that has a brass tube attached so that the yoke is kept from sliding off when working a train tender first, by the screw head. The piece between to front beam and the footplate is cut and bent from tinplate with some detailing pipes soldered to it. This piece is epoxied to the top of the front beam. All the pipes and things are made up of wire (copper for the turbine exhaust and the injectors) The lamps are made to hold warm white LEDs - the three wired in series, with a current limiting resistor and a direction control diode. The tender wheels have current collection springs that augment the loco pickups and power the rear lamps. Wiring has yet to be finalised as poor track contact causes both ends to light at once. The domed ends of the LEDS are filed flat to look less like LEDs. I found that poor track contact caused the LEDs to light at both ends, so I am working on improving the suppression. The "080 RHS final" and "080 LHS final" files are modified versions with more space inside for inductors. (not test printed) I will publish full electrical info ASAP. The cab glazing is 1mm Perspex and sits in recesses designed in. I am grateful to the folks on the Steyr Valley railway for a drawing and photos provided. I am checking that I can share these with anybody thinking of building 699.01. I have also approached Shapeways to see if they will print these parts for anybody who wishes. I must repeat that this is not a kit developed for sale, only for my own use, so you might find it demanding. This design has the bin under the tender to full width but this hit lineside features on my railway. This was modified with a Dremmel but some folks might prefer to alter the design first.
