Australopithecus garhi inhabited Eastern Africa roughly 2.5 million years ago. Only a small portion of its cranium has been recovered, accounting for the considerable amount of missing material (purple). This is the only fossil discovered to date, found in 1999 at Bouri, Middle Awash, Ethiopia. Accurate measurements for this cranium are challenging due to its fragmentary nature, but it would have likely fallen within the range of other Australopithecines. The cranial capacity for this species is approximately 450cc. I created this model to educate students on human evolution and use it in my 3D Hominin Lab. It was crafted by hand using Blender, without employing photogrammetry or 3D scanning techniques. Keep an eye out for a link to order the 3D print from Shapeways!
