Australopithecus africanus (STS 5) Cranium
sketchfab
Australopithecus africanus thrived between 2.1 and 3.3 million years ago, marking a pivotal period in human evolution. Initially met with skepticism by many scientists, who disputed its place within our ancestral lineage, this species is now widely accepted as a probable predecessor to the genus Homo. This representation draws heavily from the intriguing Mrs. Ples, unearthed in 1947. Measuring approximately 6 inches in length and 5 inches in height, this skull boasts a width of nearly 5 inches. The cranial capacity for this species falls within a range of 460 to 485cc. As an educator focused on human evolution, I crafted this model specifically for teaching purposes, utilizing it extensively in my 3D Hominin Lab. Hand-modeled using Blender, no photogrammetry or 3D scanning techniques were employed. Stay tuned for the launch of a link enabling you to order a 3D print of this model from Shapeways!
