Australopithecus africanus Location: Sterkfontein, South Africa. Age: 3 million to 2.5 million years ago. Material: Epoxy resin cast. Dimensions: Length, 68 mm; width, 110 mm; height, 157 mm. Notes: The fossil innominate, designated STS-14, was discovered in 1947 by Robert Broom and John T. Robinson at Sterkfontein in South Africa. Broom and Robinson found a partial postcranial skeleton that indicated bipedalism, revealing the species' ability to walk on two legs. The cast of Australopithecus africanus was made by the Wenner-Gren Foundation Casting Program at the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. The teaching collection of the Research Laboratories of Archaeology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill features this fossil model, crafted by Aidan Paul.
