The Australian national rugby union team, nicknamed the Wallabies, is run by Rugby Australia. They first took to the field at Sydney back in 1899, emerging victorious in their very first test match against the touring British Isles team. Australia has participated in every single one of the eight Rugby World Cups, claiming the title twice and finishing as runner-up on two separate occasions. In 1991, they edged out England in the final at Twickenham, and then repeated that success again in 1999 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, where their opponents in the final were France. The Wallabies also compete annually in The Rugby Championship (formerly known as the Tri-Nations), alongside southern hemisphere counterparts Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. They have claimed this championship a total of four times. Australia also plays test matches against various rugby-playing nations. More than a dozen former Wallabies players have been inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.
