I designed custom spool holders for my Prusa i3 printer because existing solutions didn't fit its top bar, which is 50mm tall. Most designs mount to a 40mm bar, so I took matters into my own hands. My creation isn't elegant, but it works fine. The cups for the tube half-circles have a 9.5mm radius to accommodate EMT conduit, which was lying around. However, once I built the arms, I decided to design a dedicated tube instead of hacksawing some EMT because I felt lazy. This new tube is 18mm in diameter. The STL files are pre-processed with Netfabb, and SLDPRt files from Solidworks 2014 are included for those who prefer that format. To save time, I only designed one arm and used Netfabb to mirror it for the second arm. So far, this setup is working much better than my previous pegboard-arm-with-visegrips arrangement. If you're concerned about the tube slipping out of its cups on the arms, a zip tie can provide extra security, but it shouldn't be necessary due to the weight of the spool holding it in place.
