In Roman mythology, the radiant goddess Aurora rejuvenates herself daily and soars across the sky, heralding the arrival of the sun with breathtaking splendor. Her lineage is shrouded in mystery: for Ovid, she was equally the daughter of Pallas, or alternatively, the offspring of Hyperion. This enigmatic beauty boasts two siblings: a brilliant brother named Sol, who personifies the sun, and a celestial sister known as Luna, embodying the moon's gentle light. Rarely do Roman writers emulate Hesiod and later Greek poets in naming Aurora as the mother of the Anemoi, the Winds, who are the offspring of Astraeus, the father of the stars. Aurora frequently appears in sensual poetry alongside one of her mortal admirers. A myth borrowed from Greece by Roman poets tells the tale of her romantic entanglement with Tithonus, the prince of Troy. Tithonus was a mortal, destined to age and eventually succumb to death. Desperate to be reunited with her beloved for eternity, Aurora implored Jupiter to grant immortality to Tithonus. Jupiter granted her wish, but she failed to request eternal youth as well, leaving her lover forever encumbered by the weight of years. In a poignant twist, Aurora transformed Tithonus into a cicada, condemning him to an existence devoid of youth and vitality.
