The Italian roots of several renowned figures celebrated in the Pincio gardens are questionable; however, their inclusion was driven by good intentions. Although the collapse of the centuries-old papal regime brought a breath of fresh air to the people's mentality, chauvinism persisted deeply within late 1800s society: out of 228 individuals, only three were female - St.Catherine of Siena (14th century), Italy's patron saint, Vittoria Colonna, a noblewoman and poet who lived in the first half of the 1500s, and Grazia Deledda, a distinguished writer, Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1926. Aurelio Saliceti (Mosciano Sant'Angelo, 1804 - Turin, 1862) was an Italian politician, lawyer, and patriot affiliated with the Risorgimento. He was one of the first affiliates to Young Italy. In 1848 he was appointed Minister for Justice by the Constitutional Government, but resigned a few days later due to his failed reform plans. He went to Rome to fight in favor of the Roman Republic and was later sent into exile to London, where he lived as a poor man, yet remained committed to his country. He moved to Paris in 1851, then withdrew from Giuseppe Mazzini's Italian National Committee to join an effort aimed at ousting the Bourbons from Naples. In 1860 he returned to Naples and held a chair on the Supreme Court while also obtaining a university chair. Aurelio Saliceti died in 1862. This object is part of "Scan The World".
