Augustin Daniel Belliard was a prominent French general and diplomat who left his mark on the formation of the Belgian kingdom. Born in Fontenay-le-Comte on May 25, 1769, he witnessed firsthand the turbulent events of the French Revolution during his studies in Poitou. In 1790, Belliard attended the Fête de la Fédération in Paris as a representative of his native village and soon joined the Armée du Nord under General Dumoriez. He quickly rose through the ranks to become an officer and fought bravely at the battles of Valmy, Jemappes, and Neerwinden.
