The Audi R8, a two-seater sports car featuring Audi's quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, was introduced by German automaker Audi AG in 2006. Exclusively designed, developed, and manufactured by Audi AG's subsidiary company, quattro GmbH, the R8 is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform and utilizes an aluminium monocoque built using space frame principles. Located at Neckarsulm in Germany, the car is produced by quattro GmbH within a newly renovated factory at Audi's 'aluminium site'. The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006 after being unveiled as a production body prototype in January of that year. Sharing its name with the 24 Hours of Le Mans winning R8 Le Mans Prototype (LMP), the car has been praised by six-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx for its exceptional handling.
