Audi’s open-top offering, the R8 Spyder, stays remarkably faithful to the Coupé's aesthetic identity while boasting significant tweaks under the hood - or rather, over it. Specifically, engineers had to get creative with the chassis and cabin design to make room for the hydraulic setup that lets drivers retract their canvas top in a snap. Speaking of which, this retractable lid weighs in at 97 pounds, takes about 13 seconds to do its thing even when moving at 31 mph, and gets camouflaged by a lightweight carbon fiber panel that's all about minimizing extra heft. But what really has folks talking is the Audi R8 Spyder’s revised suspension layout – particularly the re-strengthened front windscreen frame - which has resulted in a dramatic 50% increase in torsional rigidity compared to its predecessors. Now, onto more engine-centric good news: the R8 Spyder gets exactly one drivetrain option, namely a 5.2L V10 engine with no fewer than 399 horsepower. To be clear, there's another top-of-the-line Coupé called the R8 V10 Plus which trades focus on circuit use for even more juice - a heady 456 HP. We were fortunate enough to try this show-stopper ourselves.
