The Audi R8 Typ 42, a mid-engine 2-seater sports car, boasts Audi's renowned Quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system. Unveiled by German automaker Audi AG in 2006, the car is designed and manufactured exclusively by subsidiary company Audi Sport GmbH (formerly Quattro GmbH), which operates from a factory at Neckarsulm's aluminum site in Germany. The R8 is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform and presently shares its architecture with the Huracán; its core structure, an aluminum monocoque built using space frame principles, is part of Audi Space Frame. First showcased at the 2003 Geneva and Frankfurt Motor Shows as the Le Mans Quattro concept by designers Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig, the R8's development began in 2004 with Lamberty's design approved for production. Launched officially in Paris in September 2006, the R8 is also the first production car to feature full-LED headlamps. Sharing its name with Audi's successful Le Mans-winning race car, it was praised by 6-time Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx for its handling prowess on public roads.
