I retrofitted an MMI 3G+ to my A6 and used the slot in the glove compartment to install the unit instead of the trunk, this is a panel to conceal the unit so it looks more like original equipment. The slot provides a snug fit and helps keep the MMI unit stable as well. I installed the deeper slot at the top of the unit, but it works perfectly either way, if you can find felt that matches the glove compartment and attach it to the cover then it would improve it even further.
