Attic burial stele from the 2nd century CE, likely during Hadrian's or Antoninus Pius' reign, stands in Athens at the foot of Philopappos hill. Made of marble, this artifact is housed at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Musée du Cinquantenaire) in Brussels, Belgium. A pediment tops the stele, adorned with an antefix resembling a palmette and acroteria, featuring a large rose window. The niche's relief, flanked by two pilasters, depicts a standing teenager facing forward, wearing a chlamys on their left shoulder, holding a familiar pigeon in one hand and a bird in the other. At the teenager's feet, a long-haired Maltese spitz dog is depicted squatting, surrounded by an ankle with a prophylactic ring called periskelis. The entablature bears an inscription that reads: "Mousonis, son of Demetrius, from the deme of Lamptrées". Follow me on Twitter at @GeoffreyMarchal for more updates.
