Attalus, the Imperator This statue honors a king of Pergamon. Who is depicted? Attalus I, nicknamed Soter ("Savior"; 269–197 BC), ruled Pergamon, an Ionian Greek city-state (now Bergama, Turkey), first as leader, later as monarch, from 241 BC to 197 BC. He was the second cousin and adopted son of Eumenes I, whom he succeeded, and was the first of the Attalid dynasty to take on the title of king in 238 BC.
