The tritium, hydrogen-3, 3H, 3H, is the third and last natural isotope of hydrogen; it consists of a proton and two neutrons in its atomic nucleus. This isotope is radioactive; decays to helium-3 through beta decay, and has a half-life of 12.32 years.3 Small traces of tritium are produced naturally due to the interaction of cosmic rays with atmospheric gases; also can be produced during nuclear tests. It's used in thermonuclear fusion weapons, as a tracer in isotope geochemistry, and especially in self-sustaining illumination devices. The most common method for producing tritium is bombarding a natural lithium isotope, lithium-6, with neutrons in a nuclear reactor.
