This is a comprehensive set of atomic orbitals designed to make complex concepts accessible to students. The design was inspired by BlendeLabor's probability shapes, which were adapted to create a 3D model that accurately represents the s, p, d, and f orbitals. The files include a connector that holds all three p orbitals together, providing a unique opportunity for students to visualize and interact with the atomic structure. These models are perfect for demonstrating the geometry of bonding, particularly when discussing pi and sigma bonds using combined p orbitals. By printing the orbitals in 3D, students can gain a deeper understanding of how electrons behave as waves and how they occupy specific regions around the nucleus. The project includes all the orbitals I've created so far, making it an invaluable resource for educators. The design is compatible with the Da Vinci Jr. printer and can be printed with or without supports. For added stability, rafts are recommended, but they're not essential. Printing with 0 infill works well, while adding 5% infill provides a slightly sturdier model. To enhance the printing process, I recommend using hot glue to secure the orbital connections. This set of atomic orbitals is designed for students who already have a basic understanding of probability densities and electron behavior. They should be familiar with the concept of orbtials and their role in chemical bonding. The objectives of this project are clear: students will learn to describe the 3D shapes of atomic orbitals and understand how they align to form single, double, and triple covalent bonds. The models can be used as manipulatives to facilitate student understanding and can be integrated into various lesson plans. These atomic orbital models have been a game-changer in my classroom, helping students grasp complex concepts like bonding, reactivity, and hybridization. They're perfect for upper-level chemistry classes and can be adapted to suit different teaching styles and approaches.
