The silver coin with a denomination of 8 reales originates from the sunken galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha in 1622. This eight-real coin stands as an example of what people commonly refer to as a "piece of eight." Measuring 3.7 cm in diameter, this coin weighs 26.9 grams. The mintmark "P" appearing to the left of the shield signifies that it was produced at Potosí in the Andes Mountains of present-day Bolivia. The mark "PAL" below represents an assayer named Palencia, who worked at the mint from 1617-18, and along the edge of the cross side of this coin is the date when he supervised its production, 1618.
