Atlas & the Hesperides
myminifactory
The metope depicting the collection of the Apples of the Hesperids on the eastern side showcases strong vertical elements: Athena stands proudly on the left, while Herakles temporarily supports the heavens from the middle and Atlas completes the trio on the right after collecting the apples. Athena appears more mature than in earlier depictions, wearing a simple Doric peplos without armor or shoes as she faces forward but turns her head to the right toward Herakles. As Herakles changes places with Atlas, Athena raises her arm to take over the burden of the heavens from him. The profile view of Herakles shows him facing right, and the cushion on his shoulder makes it easier for him to bear the weight. Atlas closes the right side, also facing right toward Herakles, his arms overflowing with golden apples - their source remains a secret known only to him. This scene unfolds as the Labor nears completion in the characteristic Early Classical style.
