The Atlanta Falcons are a top-tier American football team based in Atlanta, Georgia. The Falcons secured their spot in the NFL back in 1965 as an expansion team, thanks to Rankin Smith's decision to stay with the league after being offered a franchise to prevent him from joining the rival American Football League (AFL). Instead of granting Miami a franchise, the AFL awarded one to the city of Miami, Florida, giving birth to the Miami Dolphins. Today, the Falcons are tied with their longtime rivals for the title of oldest NFL franchise in the Deep South and proudly hold the distinction of being the oldest NFC team in that region. With 48 years under their belt, the Falcons boast an impressive record of 316–414–6, including division championships won in 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010, and 2012.
