I told my daughter to go running around the house noting things that we could create designs for. One of the things she came up with was the typical 'over the top of the door' hanger. After some brainstorming, we determined there was no point in just making the standard variety that you can purchase in the store. We thought it would be better to have a modular system whereby you could assemble a specific type of hanger based on putting together very simple parts.

This thing is the modular door hanger system. It consists of a base hanger, which is the part that goes over the door. The base has a trapezoid shaped inverted 'V' groove which will take attachments that you can slide into place.

Along with this base, there is a very simple sample of a loop, which can be used to hang different things.

Don't be misled. This is not just a coat hanger. It can be anything, and you can create an infinite variety of attachments to slide into the little groove. You can even use them in pairs to hang more complex things.

At any rate, there you go. One more set of things for the home.

Go create some nifty attachments.

Everything is parametric, based on the thickness of the door.

Instructions

1) Print out a base
2) Print out the attachment
3) Hang the base over an open door
4) Slip the attachment into the inverted 'V' groove on the long front of the base
5) Put your thing into the attachment
6) Rejoice!

When printing, you probably want to keep the base lying on its side, if your printer can deal with the support. That way you get nice long lines to help support the downward shearing force when it's on the door.

For the attachment, you probably want to print such that the attachment 'shoe' is vertical on your build platform, and not flat against it. Again with the shear lines, you don't want delamination to occur at the juncture where that little rectangle offset is attached to both the shoe and the cylinder.

If modularity isn't your thing, or you've settled on a base/attachment design you like, you can always do a mashup between the two and create a single solid object.
Category: Other
