This fragmentary stele showcases a robust athlete grasping a strigil and an aryballos. He is surrounded by a small servant and his two energetic hounds. A common theme in funerary steles, the deceased's representation in familiar surroundings features recurring motifs throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BCE. The treatment of anatomy and level of relief indicate this example dates from mid-fourth century. The deceased is depicted on this funerary stele, with its top part missing, as an ephebe standing forward and naked except for a himation wrapped around his left forearm. The young man holds items used at the palaestra to signify he's an athlete: in his right hand is a strigil used to scrape sweat and sand from the skin after training at the stadium. In his left hand, the cords of an aryballos are now lost.At his feet are two greyhounds, one sniffing the ground while the other lifts its muzzle to its master. To the left, a small figure in three-quarter view raises his head, representing a young slave who assists the athlete after his training session. In his crossed hands are the ends of leashes, originally highlighted in polychrome: like other Greek monumental sculpture, funerary steles were originally painted.\r\nThis object is part of "Scan The World".
